Below you will find a list of tips for every stage of the tanning process to help you achieve the perfect body fake tan.

1. Find the best formula for you

There are countless tan brands and formulas on offer however the key is finding the product that is best suited to your skin and tan desires.  If you have an upcoming special event, it is advisable to try out several different brands before choosing which brand to use for your event.  Additionally, we advise doing a test patch 24-48 hours in advance in case you have a bad reaction to the product.  It is also very important that you are choosing the best shade for your skin, which is another reason why it is advisable to do a test patch in advance.

2. Prepare your skin

Try and shave your legs at least 12 hours in advance, as it is not advisable to apply self-tanner to sensitive or irritated skin because your skin could react to the tanning formula.  Exfoliate, exfoliate and exfoliate!  Exfoliation is vital to ensuring a good allover self-tan as the removal of dead skin cells helps prevent splotching and uneven colouration.  When showering, exfoliate vigorously using an exfoliation product as well as an exfoliation glove.  Additionally, try applying body lotion to dry areas of the body such as the knees, elbows and heels prior to applying the tan as this will help prevent a build-up of tanner in these areas.

3. Apply the tan

When applying the tanner to your body, try using a tight fitting glove to prevent coloured palms.  During the application process and shortly after, avoid deodorants and perfumes as these products may interfere with the tanner and negatively impact your desired results.  If areas appear to be becoming too dark as the tanner develops, simply buff the colour down using a towel.

4. Maintenance

The key to maintaining and prolonging your fake tan is hydration, which can be achieved by drinking plenty of water and applying moisturiser regularly.  In addition to this, there are various tan extenders available that can aid in prolonging your self-tan.  Keep your tan glowing in between self-tan applications by using a gradual tanner.
